Polling Insights: How Harris's New Plans May Shift Voter Sentiment

US Presidential Polls Heat Up: Harris Prepares Economic Agenda.

Kamala Harris is set to unveil plans on Wednesday to support small U.S. businesses, according to her campaign, as the Democratic presidential candidate fine-tunes her economic policy ahead of a crucial debate with Donald Trump.

If elected in November, the U.S. Vice President will propose tax cuts and reducing red tape for small businesses, as she plans to announce at a campaign event in New Hampshire. Harris has generated excitement since replacing President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, pledging an "opportunity economy," but she has faced criticism for not fully detailing how she intends to achieve that.

A Harris campaign official stated that she would "propose a dramatic tenfold increase in tax relief for starting a small business and set a goal of 25 million new small business applications during her first term." The plan would increase the tax deduction for small businesses' startup costs from $5,000 to $50,000.

Her speech in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, will take place hours before former Republican President Trump participates in a town hall with Fox News in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a key swing state.

The two candidates are clashing over tax policies, with Trump accusing Harris of copying his plan to eliminate taxes on tips for service workers and promising tax cuts across the board. Harris, on the other hand, is advocating for raising federal taxes on corporations and wealthy families.

Debate Preparations

Trump and Harris are scheduled to hold their first presidential debate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 10. Harris is reportedly staying in the state to prepare for the debate after a campaign stop in Pittsburgh, her second visit to the city this week, following a joint appearance with Joe Biden on Monday.

The 59-year-old Democrat has gained ground on Trump in the polls since Biden dropped out of the race just over six weeks ago. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll released on Tuesday showed Harris leading Trump 48% to 43%, marking an eight-point swing from Trump’s lead over Biden in late June. The poll found Harris made double-digit gains with key groups, including Hispanic and Black voters and younger people.

Trump criticized Harris ahead of her New Hampshire visit, claiming there were "issues for her campaign in New Hampshire." The 78-year-old former president suggested it was due to Biden's decision earlier this year to cancel New Hampshire’s traditional role as the first U.S. state to hold a primary election. He also blamed high living costs in the state.

However, New Hampshire is not considered one of the crucial battleground states expected to determine the outcome of the November election. The state has voted Democratic for the past 20 years, with leading election forecaster Larry Sabato recently shifting it from "leans Democratic" to "likely Democratic" in his ratings.
